Surfboard fin Installation and Removal

Removing and installing surfboard fins is quite simple, as long as you have the appropriate equipment and the right fins. Most of the time it will either be a Futures base fin or FCS base fin, in either case all that is needed is an Allen key which is almost always supplied with the fins. If you need fins or want new ones, Numfish have a selection of FCS and FUTURES based fin sets that come in a bag with an allen key.  Our Surfboard fins are available online and can be shipped Australia Wide.
  1. Unscrew the grub-screws far enough so the base of the fin can fit in the fin box/plugs
  2. Put the fin in the slot/s without pressing the pointed parts if the fin base into the fiberglass surface. The side fins will normally have a flat side which faces toward the centre of the board. The centre fin (or trailing centre fins for a Quad set up) will be curved on both sides.
  3. Tighten the grub-screws gently so the fin is solid and held in position. Tighten the screw until you feel it press on the fin, then nip it up by no more than ¼ to ½ a turn.
  4. They don’t need to be super tight as salt water jams everything up even more.
To remove fins, simply unscrew the grub screws and pull the fin out, make sure the grub screws are unscrewed far enough so the fin comes out with relative ease, remember that salt and sand builds up, so it might feel a little tight to pull out. Take care to pull the fin out straight, if you pull it out in a twisting motion it is most likely you will pierce the fiberglass with the fin leading or trailing point. BE CAREFUL.
